Stella volunteers there & tries to cheer her up but encounters a cantankerous, despondent Bessie. But when Bessie discovers Stella's secret desire to be a singer/songwriter, their friendship builds bonds & breaks down walls. Think Thelma & Louise 50’s & 80’s. STELLA PIERCE (LEAD) 50's. A “super mom.” Loves her family, is a good mother of 2 teenagers, helps her husband run their business from home. Does it all for others, never considering her own wants & needs (until she meets Bessie), and thinks what she does isn’t worth much. Has always assessed her worth by the success of her family & their limited acknowledgment of her. 13 songs. $100. BESSIE RYAN (LEAD) 70’s-80’s. Spry, dynamic, with a mischievous & independent attitude. Is cosmopolitan, a world traveler, loves Mozart, sweet sherry, walks along the bay, and her garden. Becomes a surrogate mother to Stella, her inspiration, and a catalyst for change. Has one child, Martin, an anesthesiologist. He is her one heartbreak/regret. They have been estranged for many years. He has her committed to a nursing home, not to be inconvenienced. Never visits her. She feels abandoned & betrayed but longs to hold him. Has worked hard all her life, taking care of her 5 siblings after her mother died when she was 12. Never knew her father. Has a free & easy attitude about life & problems we create for ourselves. Loves life, finds humor in average situations. Takes good care of & loves Bessie. Sings Gospel in church choir. 2 songs. $50. FRANK PIERCE 50's. Stella’s husband. A miser. Work & money are his life & worth. Values people for their political importance or wealth. Is always right, arrogant, & callous. Never listens. Relationship with his children is uneasy & shallow. Sees his role as a disciplinarian. Never compliments Stella. Instead, constantly criticizes her. Never vulnerable with her; yet, inside, he is a lonely man. 2 songs. $50 ROBIN PIERCE 18.
